Difference between Dynamics 365 Business Central: Manufacturing and Assembly functionality

The manufacturing sector is a broad sector with companies has their own unique requirement.

For small to medium-sized organizations that assembles a limited number of units with minimum manufacturing, you might be wondering which enterprise solution can fit the requirement of the company. Dynamics 365 Business Central brings you a manufacturing module with very simple and quick to implement manufacturing capability.

In Business Central, you get “build to stock” or “build to order” that includes primary modules required for manufacturing systems. Bill of material, order planning, capacity planning, material requirement planning, and shop floor configuration.

On the other hand, the assembly module including “build to stock” and “build to order” works better for the specific product requirements. For example, users of the sales module can bring up the assembly BOM for stock keeping unit and change the requirement on the fly.

By picking an inventory SKU with a BOM with quality & quantity of material, the assembly order is automatically created within sales order and is sent directly to the assembly department. This makes the assembly more flexible and out of the box.

The manufacturing option has important components like a recording of scrap, order production, flushing order forward and backward, and shop floor management. So, manufacturing offers a lot of functionalities for inventory handling, scrap, and subcontractors.

Now comes the question of which solution to choose-manufacturing or assembly?

If you need tight control on shop floor management, scheduling resources and need custom configuration, go for Business Central manufacturing. Additionally, you get the option to manage complex MRP with the ability to manage inventory purchases and sub-components manufacturing.

If you want easy configuration of items and sales order, and do not want shop floor management or capacity planning we recommend you go for Business Central assembly. But the advantage here is assembly can be used in combination with manufacturing.

To conclude both options of Dynamics Business Central fit specific niches. While assembly is more flexible, manufacturing has its own benefits.

Let’s discuss your industry-specific requirementsand implement the best fit solution for your business.
